The
National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (NCPEA)
announces a call for applications and expressions of interest
in the position of editor of the Journal of Elder Abuse
& Neglect (JEAN). The goal of this quarterly journal
is to raise awareness of maltreatment, provide current research
and practice information, and present strategies for the
prevention of elder abuse and neglect. An international
journal, JEAN provides a forum for the discussion of program
developments, policy initiatives, personal commentaries,
and for the scientific investigation of elder abuse and
neglect targeted to researchers, educators, practitioners,
and policy-makers in the fields of aging, health, mental
health, social services, adult protective services, domestic
violence, law and criminal justice.
JEAN
is the leading interdisciplinary scholarly journal in the
field of elder abuse and neglect. Similar to the editorship
of many journals of professional associations, the editor
position is largely unpaid and therefore requires commitment
and support of the editor's home institution. There is some
nominal remuneration possible. Candidates for the position
of editor must make a substantial commitment of time to
the journal. Among the editor's responsibilities are soliciting,
processing and editing submissions in a timely fashion;
working with and further developing the editorial board;
naming international and associate editors; and, increasing
the journal's visibility and readership, nationally and
internationally.
Applications
should contain a detailed description of the financial and
organizational support committed by the applicant's home
institution, including arrangements for release time, allocation
of office space, editorial assistance, and other resources
to support editorial functions. There is a strong preference
for a five-year commitment, although a minimum term of three
years is possible. Candidates should propose a plan for
developing an international co-editor as well as associate
editors. Persons interested in the position should apply
electronically by sending a CV and a statement that outlines
their writing, editorial, and publishing experience and
their vision of the journal for the future. The deadline
for receipt of applications is November 1, 2001.
Applications
should be sent to: Lorin Baumhover (baumhoverla@appstate.edu).
Please direct any questions regarding this process electronically
to Dr. Baumhover. He can also be reached at 828-262-2201
or at the Department of Sociology and Social Work, Appalachian
State University, Boone, NC 28608.
